Robbery occurs in the Alkek Parking Garage Tuesday afternoon.
San Marcos, Tx- A man robbed a Texas State student Tuesday night as she walked through the Alkek parking garage to get to her dorm.
Estella Garza, a sophomore at Texas State, was robbed of her processions as she was leaving the Alkek Library. Estella was walking through the Alkek parking garage to get to the San Jacinto Dorms when the robbery happened.
“A man on a bicycle rode up behind me and grabbed me by my backpack,” Garza said. “Being thrown to the ground, I had no time to react as the man on the bike got away with my backpack.”
Estella was robbed of her back and all of her belongings inside. Two textbooks; a notebook containing important coursework; a wallet containing $43, a drivers license and two credit cards where also inside the backpack. All items amounted to about $400. Luckily, Estella had her keys and phone in her pocket giving her a chance to call 9-1-1.
University Police Chief Ralph Meyer responded to the scene. Estella tried to describe the suspect to officer Meyer as best as possible but mention that he was wearing a hat and bandana that covered his face. However, Estella was able to describe the suspect as a tall, thin man, wearing a UT T-shirt and shorts.
This is not the first robbery to occur on campus. In fact, there have been four robberies just this semester. Campus police believe that the same suspect is responsible for all other robberies that have occurred in the past.
So far an arrest has not been made, but campus police are working diligently to find the man responsible.
“I am forming a task force to address the problem,” Meyer said. “We have additional police officers patrolling the campus in areas that may be vulnerable to similar activity.”
Police also recommend students to walk in groups or ride with the Bobcat Bobbies when walking to or from campus at night. Officers assure the campus community that the perpetrator will be caught, but are asking for anyone with information about these robberies to contact University Police Department at 512-245-2890.
