Fragments & Streaks
Fragments&Streaks is a collection of work that seeks to feel and understand the sentiments behind mental clarity and delusion.
It's been clear that in the past few years, this world has gone through a drastic and consistent change. With such heightened events consistently impacting us to such a strong degree, it has often been hard to any form of steady clarity. There has been so much polarity between absolutely pain-riddled events and truly inspiring moments that the "in-between" has essentially been lost. We are living in a state of reality in which things are in a state of demise or utter joy. With such separation between emotional circumstances, and with circumstances changing far too often, our realities have only been visions of unsteadiness.
The work within this project is meant to communicate the essence of feeling the turmoil that we often feel, but also the loneliness that can come from the lack of understanding of this fragmented reality. On the contrary, this work is also meant to present the exact opposite, highlighting the brief, soon-to-pass-us-by, blissful moments that we discover outside of the broken affairs that impact us so regularly.
Working with the analog process of photography, Nathan Gentry worked with various 120mm format film stocks to create the work seen below. Using only expired film, Nathan was able to utilize the imperfections within the impacted emulsion to enhance the grain or distort the color within the image. Through post-production processes, Nathan then used an alternative form of development by using a form of caffenol development to allow him to not only develop his black and white work but his color work as well.
