SouthSide Specials

Hofbrauhaus on the Southside is where anyone can get a 32-ounce pitcher for only three bucks from 9-11p.m. on Thursdays.
Two-dollar cocktails can be found at Smiling Moose, Jacks and Jimmy D’s on several nights as well.
To find unique drinks, one should check out The Tiki Lounges tropical line-up, or Carson City for their 64-ounce Papa Smurf Bowl.
Going out to the Southside for some good drinks can be pretty expensive, but there are places like Trixie’s, Mario’s, Casey’s and much more that have specials to keep your wallet fat and your tab low.
“I definitely think it is possible to keep a low bar tab if you just know where to go,” local Southsider, Brandy Cullem said. “My friends and I often map our night our based on where the cheapest drinks are at that time.”
The Southside of Pittsburgh is home to what seems like an endless number of bars. All of which have drink specials that they claim to be the best. However, when it really comes down to it, there are some bars that rise above the rest. Depending on time and day you are looking for a cheap drink, there is one to be found. Hofbrauhaus, Carson City and Trixie’s all have amazing deals like one dollar 32-ounce Yuengling’s, two-dollar, 32-ounce Bud lights and two-dollar well drinks, but those deals only last from 9-11 p.m... Meanwhile, other bars, like Mario’s, let their specials run all night- and by all night, I mean till everyone leaves. So, there is no reason for anyone’s wallet to be dieting when looking for a good drink because there is surely one to be found at a bar close to where they’re standing. Hofbrauhaus bartender, Madison Kriegisch claims that Hofbrauhaus is the place to be from 9-11 p.m. if you are looking for big drinks at low prices.
“Starting your night at Hofbrau can be a real penny saver for any drinker,” said Madison. “Only we offer a 32-ounce premium Hefeweizen in multiple flavors like Blueberry, Peach, and Cranberry, but we also have our Dunkel all other German beers for only three bucks.”
Although Hofbrauhaus’s specials on beer seem to be fitting for many, that is not the only item that brings people in.
“I love their special on Moscow Mules,” said Camille Kammich. “A lot of people typically go for the three-dollar beers, but their three-dollar Moscow Mules seem to be just as popular.”
Several other folks have claimed that they like to start their night elsewhere when looking to find great deals.
“Trixie’s and Carson are two of my favorites from 9-11 p.m. on Thursdays,” said Jake Kasperek. “Trixie’s is great because they have two-dollar drafts and wells, but Carson is virtually unbeatable with their Thursday night special of a 32-ounce Yuengling for only a dollar!”
At one location, the drink specials never end on a Thursday night.
“We’re known as the closing bar,” said head bartender of Mario’s, Aaron James. “Once the night starts, we don’t stop serving our three-dollar Bud Lights, or any of our drinks until everyone leaves. We have served drinks till four in the morning at times.”
Harron Saenz often finds himself looking for a cheap drink and says that there are some bars that offer great deals on any day of the week.
“Casey’s is great because they have two-dollar High Life bottles for two dollars all day, every day,” said Harron.
Having a low tab at the end of the night does not mean you only have to look out for beer specials because many bars on the Southside offer deals on mixed cocktails at unbeatable prices as well. Rebecca Lessner mentioned that she and her friends prefer mixed drinks over beer, and often look flock to where the best deals on are.
“One of my favorite places to get a deal on good mixed drinks is Jacks,” said Lessner. “At any time, I can get a 16-ounce mixed drink of my choice for only four bucks. So, the amount you get for the price they offer is pretty good.”
However, once again, Carson City comes back into the picture with their great deals on cocktails.
“We have two nights of the week in which drink seekers can get deals on mixed drinks, said Carson City Bartender, Tracy Molyneaux. “On Wednesday nights, we can serve you up any Crown Royal drink for only three dollars, and then we offer any Captain Morgan drinks for only two bucks on Thursday from 9-11 p.m.”
A bartender at Smiling Moose, Derek Blankship, said that their 5-7 p.m. happy hour deal is one that people should definitely check out.
“We cut our prices in half on all of our drinks during happy hour,” said Blankship. “This includes all of our special 16-ounce cocktails like the Mr. Freeze, a blueberry inspired drink, the Flux Capacitor, our special Sprite and sours beverage and much more for only two bucks during happy hour.
But, there is one place that Josh Park has a deal on cheap cocktails that cannot be beaten by any bar on the Southside.
“Jimmy D’s by far has the greatest special on mixed drinks throughout the entire Southside,” said Park. “If you can get out to Jimmy’s on a Thursday night between 9-11:30 p.m. you can have all the mixed drinks you want for only fifty cents!”
Now beer and mixed drinks are the most distinct choices one might find when checking out any of the bars on the Southside. But, many of these bars also have a unique one of a kind concoction like The Tiki Lounges, Fog Cutter; Jacks, Batman drink, and Carson City’s, 64-ounce Papa Smurf on their menus that can’t be found anywhere else. Not to mention the fact that they even feature them during their special hours.
“My favorite has always been the Batman at Jacks,” said Amanda Woodall. “It’s a 16-ounce glass filled halfway with coke, mixed with root beer Schnapp’s and Baileys. Then you drop a shot of vanilla vodka in the mixture. Kind of like a car bomb, but this thing only cost five bucks.”
Individuals like Taylor Kirby, who are looking for a full night’s deal in one drink seek out the Papa Smurf from Carson City.
“The Papa Smurf is gigantic and just one will serve you right, said Kirby. “This thing is 64-ounces of alcoholic bliss for eighteen bucks and you can get it in grape, cherry or raspberry.”
Meanwhile, back at Casey’s, bartender Jesse Jula is whipping up one of Casey’s most popular menu items, the $2.50 Mystery Shot.
“People love the Mystery Shot,” said Jula. “I can’t even tell you what the Mystery Shot is myself because I don’t even know what it is until I start making it. However, I always make up something delicious that everyone enjoys.”
But, if there is any place throughout all of the Southside that people need to check out when looking for unique drinks, it’s The Tiki Lounge.
“We have a full menu of Tropical Infused cocktails, which all are featured on our two-dollar well specials from 9-11:30 p.m.,” said owner James Morrow. “There’s the Gilligan’s Island, our peach vodka infused drink; the Fu Manchu, a ginger, rum and sours cocktail; the Coconut Bliss, our version of a Pina Colada and plenty more to choose from.”
With all of these places having such great deals, it’s hard to decide which bar has the best deals. It all depends on what time you are out, where on the Southside you're wanting to go and what kind of drinks you're craving. No matter what your craving, the time and location is, you’re sure to get a great deal.
So, if you are planning on going out to the Southside with a group of friends, or maybe even by yourself, there are plenty of places to make it home without going broke. All you have to do from here is find out what you want to drink and get on down to the Southside.
