Free Sundays At the Museum
Thanks to Free Sundays, people who couldn't afford to get into the Carnegie Museum of Art before, now have a chance to visit the museum free of charge.
"I think it is great. On any other day, I wouldn't be able to afford to come to the museum, but this event has made it accessible for people like me to have the chance to visit the museum," said college student Dan Hanson.
The museum decided to offer free admission to the public to ensure that everyone in the community has the opportunity to view fine art. They believe that the museum serves as a visual source of education and the realize that it can be difficult for some families to afford general admission. Free Sundays is their way of allowing everyone the chance to be educated and experience the art freely.
Shannon Hughes, an employee of the museum, also thought that it is important for museums to offer opportunities such as Free Sunday to the public. She mentioned that it ensures that everyone gets a chance to visualize art within their community.
"I think we need to have more inclusivity amongst our regions to ensure that all people no matter what income or socio-demographic someone comes from, everyone has an equal opportunity to gain an artistic education through their museums," said Hughes.
Because of the free admission, hundreds of new visitors got a chance to see some historical art exhibitions for the first time.
"I finally got a chance to see The Harlem Series," said Jimmy Cochran. "I'm not sure if I'd be able to see the collection if it wasn't for the free admission."
Even people from out of town had an unexpected thing to do on their "To Do List."
"After purchasing my flight to Pittsburgh, I was pretty strapped for cash and didn't know what to do around here," said Nick Guild. "So, the fact that the museum is letting me experience this for free, is awesome!"
The Carnegie Museum of Art will continue to host Free Sundays until November 19th. Members interested in attending the event can come by the museum anytime between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Attendees will be able to check out any exhibit within the museum. Current exhibits consist of, The Harlem Series, The Poison Exhibit and the Dinosaur Experience.
