The Pittsburgh File
July, 2017, I became a resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It did not take long for me to recognized the variety in culture, throughout the city. One second, you are walking through a farmers market, full of individuals of different ethnicities. Then, just a mile down the road, you are in a quaint mountain town, looking out at the entire city. Each borough contains it's own culture, and individuality. Not only does the inner city provide a plentiful amount of unique qualities, but surrounding the city of Pittsburgh is an endless amount of beautiful parks. Many of these parks are vastly different than parks I would typically see while living down south.
The interest I have in each city and township has pushed my interest into documenting what I see during my two-year stint in Pittsburgh. This project is more of a file than it is a project. I say this, because there will be no common theme of images. The point of this file is contain all aspects of Pittsburgh that I find aesthetically pleasing. So, as you navigate through the images, you may see some images dated buildings, zany characters, wild events, and even state parks surrounding Pittsburgh's inner city. Nobody knows what this file will contain. However, I hope to capture Pittsburgh in a way that everyone can see its unique qualities.

This month- July 2018- I shot a roll of Kodak Ektachrome/Kodachrome IS0 50, which had expired in 1992. I was amazed at the way the images came out in terms of color, grain and all other aspects. I could not believe how easily the grain still came through, even at an ISO of 50.

The passing of my grandfather was saddening experience. Not only for me, but for my family as a whole. My grandfather was a man who lived by the camera. His house was filled with cameras. Medium Format, Large Format, 110 Film Backs, 35mm's, 127mm Film Backs, and so much more. Looking back now, he may have been the reason why I picked up a camera in my early teenage years. I think that, as a child, seeing all those interesting contraptions sitting on the shelves, my have been the original spark that led to me one day pick up a camera. Upon his passing, my grandfather left me with something that I could not be more proud to own; his collection of cameras. When I discovered all the cameras he left me, I was speechless. If there was to be anything left behind for me (not that I needed anything) that could connect me closer to my grandfather, his passion for photography, as well as my passion for photography, it would be the opportunity to shoot with those same exact cameras that he once shot on. The best part is that many of the cameras still have unfinished rolls in them. So, I have decided that I would finish off the rolls, develop them, and see what my grandfather once shot. Sadly, with this first roll, which came from a Canon AE, only contained a few of his own images. Of these photos, were a few barley visual, images of the moon- almost as if he was just trying to shoot past the first few frames. As for my images, I was compelled. I thought it was great to see a roll of film, which had expired in the 80's, still hold some color and contrast. This was a roll of Sears Ultra-Color 200 Film. I can't wait to see what comes from future rolls. Not only from what I create, but definitely what my grandfather once created.
