Most skateboarders, who have been skating for most of their lives, have found that skating is much more than a hobby. Obviously, skateboarding is a passion of theirs. They love doing it. However, skateboarding has led them down paths that they could have never foreseen. If it was not for skateboarding, they would not be standing in the shoes they are in today. It is an ongoing truth in the world of skateboarding, that skateboarding has to lead many skaters down the roads they live today. Plain and simple, skateboarding has been a contributor in nearly every decision they make. Whether it's determining a new career path, a tool to relieve stress, moving to new areas, keeping away from a life of crime, or even opening our minds to new hobbies, skateboarding is typically the link behind what the outcome in their decision making was. Millions of times I’ve heard phrases like, “if it wasn’t for skateboarding, I’d be locked up right now,” or “I don’t think I would have ever made a career out of photography if it wasn’t for me finding skateboarding first,” and “I skate to ease my mind from all the troubles back at home.” But, that’s just the beginning. It seems like skateboarding is a corridor that leads skaters towards a destination that they would have never seen before if the introduction to skating never came to them.
In this documentary, I want to get behind some of these stories. Why they decided to start skateboarding. What does skateboarding do for them mentally, physically, spiritually. How has it influenced major decisions in their lives- career, moving, friends they meet, hobbies they discover. Has it moved their lives in a direction better direction than it was going before they found a skateboard- away from a life of crime, poverty, depression. Who and how they were introduced to skateboarding. Relationships they have created. Experiences they have had. And, where they see their future is heading- even if skateboarding is not involved. I think that there is a bigger picture behind skateboarding and a compelling story that you can not find with typical ball sports like, football, baseball, basketball, etc. I just want to discover the truth behind how skateboarding has impacted so many individuals in a better way.
This film will contain words and conversations by skateboarders who have felt the influential impacts on their lives based off what they learned, who they met, where they came and where they are going, all of which stemmed from skateboarding.
